Physical education is considered as “an effective educational activity that is directly related to human health, character development and increasing moral efficiency, and the upbringing of a human being who is strong in a national sense with high collective spirits and behaviors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the practices and challenges in teaching the learning process of Physical education in the selected secondary schools of Sidama Regional State. The researcher used both qualitative and quantitative approaches with the descriptive survey as the main research design. A simple random sampling technique was used to select students to analyze the data of descriptive statistics. The data-gathering tools were questionnaires, interviews, and observation checklists. The result showed that the major challenges affecting the teaching-learning process of Physical education in the study of secondary schools were challenges related to the school, the teacher, the learner, and the family. The findings of the study clearly showed that lack of suitable sports fields, lack of sports facilities and equipment, unsuitable school environment, large class size, inadequate period allotment, and lack of confidence and interest in physical activities towards learners. Based on the findings of the study recommendations were also forwarded.
