Harmonic Impact of Adama-II Wind Power Generation (150MW) on Distribution Network and Mitigation Using Harmonic Filters
    (Hawassa University, 2021-10-16) MegersaTesema
This paper presents the studies of the harmonic impact of a significantly medium scale Adama II wind power generation of 150MW on distribution network system. This 150MW of Adam wind power generation-II is modeled in detail using the commercial grade MATLAB version 2018, which is validated through load flow studies conducted by MATAB software. This research investigates and mitigates the harmonic distortion levels in distribution networks. In this research Adama-II wind power has been selected. Measurements and calculations had been done considering the distribution transformers which supply power to customer. The Total Harmonic Distortion of Current (THDi) has been the main focus for the study and it is compared with the power quality standards stated on IEEE-519 and IEC-61000.Results of the research include the total harmonic distortion of voltage levels in study area network is above 50.6% in the distribution network. This value is high as compared to IEEE-519 and IEC-61000 standards (the standards in which appalling harmonic limits in power system and estimates the harmonic indices at the point of interfaces through mutual agreeable methods). One of the most economic and effective ways to mitigate harmonics in power systems is through the use of passive tuned harmonic filters. In this thesis a single-tuned, high pass, double tuned and C type filters were designed as a mitigating technique and observed to reduce the harmonic distortion levels to acceptable values (the values of the convention agreement of harmonic magnitude in power system should be ≤ 3%). The current and voltage distortion caused by the non-linear loads is investigated with Primary data from the Adama wind-II wind power farm generation company. The simulation is verified the system output to observe the extent of the wave shapes of the existing system with and without the addition of designed filters.
