ASSESSING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF COOPERATIVE LEARNING IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS IN HAWASSA CITY SECONDARY SCHOOLS, SIDAMA REGION

dc.description.abstractCooperative learning is a pedagogical practice that has been shown to benefit students’ social and academic abilities. The purpose of the study was to assess the implementation of cooperative learning method in physical education class on selected secondary schools in Hawassa City Administration, Sidama region (Adarie Millenium, Addis Ketema, Misrak Chora and Tabor secondary grade 9 and grade 10 students). The study employed a descriptive survey design and to identify the implementation of cooperative learning level of views physical education teachers (PET) and students. Population of the study were eight (8) physical education teachers and 6,944 students in 2015 E.C academic year in four selected schools. From total population teachers and students were taken by using of purposive sampling method eight (8) and seven hundred (700) simple random sampling methods respectively. The results of the study revealed that PET perception on cooperative learning was advantageous for students to improve the social interaction, enhance creativity, psychological benefit and academic benefit. But they complained on the availability of classrooms size as well as number of students assigned with huge class size and materials and equipment’s to conduct the subject matter in apocopate way. The study results showed that the student’s attitude towards cooperative learning was positive they were improving to social benefit, enhance skills, develop to express their understanding for their teachers and classmates and successively academic achieved. The view of grade 9 and grade 10 students on cooperative learning were not significant different the Levine’s test was greater than 0.05 with data collection instrument questions of item number 1, 2, 3, and 5 of mean scores were the same. Contrary, item number 4 and 6 the Levine’s test were less than 0.05, which means that the variance for the two groups mean scores were significantly different, thus the degrees of students working with their classmate collaborative manner was different during cooperative learning. Finally, the study results strongly recommended that, the schools and the teachers should work together to improve the school environment so as to create conducive cooperative learning for implementation of quality of education.
