Item EXPLORING THE PARANTAL INVOLVEMENT IN THE CAREEER CHOICE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS: THE CASE OF YEKATIT 25/67 SECONDARY SCHOOL IN HOSSANA TOWN, HADIYA ZONE(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2017-12) DESTA GOSHISOThe purpose of this study was to exploring the parental involvement in career choices of secondary school students: The case of Yekatit 25/67 secondary school in Hossana town, Hadiya zone. The descriptive explorative research design because it is appropriate to understand detail experience of study participants based on an individual’s subjective opinions, feelings, and beliefs about the parental involvement in the career choice of their children. The area of study was Yekatit 25/67 secondary school in Hossana town, Hadiya zone in region of central Ethiopia. The target population of this study was 2942, from those 981 parents and 1961 students of Yekatit 25/67 secondary school in Hossana town. The sample size for the study was 22. Purposive sampling techniques was employed to select participants of study. The instruments of data collection in this study was interview and FGD. The study participants were parents and their children. The procedure of data collection by asking interview questions based on one to one and FGD.The data was analysis by qualitative approach based four theme related to basic research questions of the study through words in the form of narratives. This study finding from interview of parents and children FGD shown that parental involvement positively or negatively can determined career choices of their children and its success based on ways of their involvement. Parental involvement in the career choice of their children influenced by their internal and external factors such as their intrinsic wish about their children to have good things and environmental factors. The ways of almost parents provided support for their children in the career choice not considerable their children interests and talents. The study concluded that parental involvement had positive or negative consequences in the career choice of their children and its success based on ways of their involvements. Finally, the study suggested that parental involvement should be consider their children's talent and preference in them career choice rather than choosing career based their expectations about their children future profession. KEY terms of study,Item EXPLORING RISK FACTORS AND LIVING CONDITION OF STREET CHILDREN: A CASE STUDY OF ARBA MINCH TOWN, SNNPR(2019-11) ETETE KELIKLE YETEMEGNThe street children have been increasing at alarming rate and escalating problem in the world. The general objective of the study was to explore risk factors and living condition of children is living on the streets in Sikella sub-city of Arba Minch Town. To achieve the study objective, a qualitative research design was used to generate data both from primary and secondary sources. Primary data were collected through in-depth interviews of 20 street children. Collected data were analyzed, summarized, and interpreted using qualitative methods of data analysis. The study revealed that poverty, disagreement with stepmother/father, family divorce, peer pressure, being orphan and lack of alternative were the major push factors while peer pressure, glaring urban life (hope for a change), in search of money, better urban life, hope for better health, and education are the major pull factors. Lack of sufficient health care causes, malaria, and other transmitted diseases are some problems while the disparate feeling of fear, sexual abuse, use drug and alcohol, and fear of rape were the major psychological problems of the street children. It is recommended to offer children with life skill training, mentoring and provide with livelihood options while addressing the misconception towards street children.Item EXPLORING THE ATTITUDES OF STUDENTS TOWARDS SEEKING GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING SERVICES TO PREVENT RISKY SEXUAL BEHAVIORS: THE CASE OF HAWASSA UNIVERSITY(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2023-03) SAFIYA AMANThe purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of Hawassa University students towards seeking guidance and counseling service (G&Cs) to prevent risky sexual behaviors (RSBs). Data were gathered from randomly selected 399 students from four campuses. A mixed-methods approach with a cross-sectional research design was employed. Self-developed and adapted questioner from Fischer and Turner (1970), (i.e., Attitudes toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale), and interview are used in data gathering tool. Both open-ended and close-ended questions were for students, while the interview was conducted with counselors. The validity of an instrument was improved by experts, and the reliability of instruments was checked using the EFA and Cronbach alpha. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of sampling adequacy of factor analysis was 0.820. The quantitative data were analyzed using both inferential and descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation), Pearson’s bivariate correlation, regression analysis, T-test, and ANOVA were used for data analysis using SPSS version 25 while, thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative data from open-ended questionnaire items and interviews. The analysis found out that the majority of students had positive attitudes towards seeking G&Cs to prevent RSBs. Regression analysis result indicates age, year of study, , awareness, and availability of G&Cs to prevent RSBs have an impact on the development of attitude (β =.192, p<.05), (β =.318, p<.05), (β =.417, p<.05), and (β =.469, p<.05), respectively. The study also revealed that students have low, awareness regarding availability and accessibility of G&Cs for RSBs. Further findings show there is a significant difference between age, year of study, and religion in students’ attitude. In conclusion, the majority of Hawassa University students exhibit positive attitudes towards seeking G&Cs to prevent RSBs. This suggests that there is a favorable disposition among students towards utilizing these services. The study recommended that to enhance awareness and accessibility of G&Cs for RSBs, consider implementing the following strategies; awareness campaigns, integration with academic programs, peer support programs and regular assessment.Item IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DGREE OF MASTERS OF ART IN COMMINITY DEVELOPMENT(Hawassa university, 2023-03) By Eyerusalem KidanemariamThe purpose of this study was identifying determinants income diversification of rural households in Kembata Tembaro Zone, SNNPRS. The study employed descriptive research design with mixed quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected by identifying 397 sample respondents through multistage stratified sampling mechanisms. In qualitative analysis 12 key informants were purposively selected. During data analysis both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were employed by using statistical tool named as STATA 16 version. The results of the study revealed that majority of rural households in the study area lead their life by on farm activities of either crop farming, animal husbandry or mixed agriculture. Relatively rural households in the study area earn better mean income from on-farm activities compared to off farm and non-farm activities. Supplementing household income and insufficient agricultural production were primary motive for few rural households to engage in off farm and non-farm activities in the study area. Based on the findings 68.5 % of the respondents have alternative sources of the income and the remaining 30.5% of the respondents merely depends on single income source. Regarding with the major determinants of income diversification, marital status, education status the household head, household income, participation of training on income diversification and infrastructure access were the major determinants of income diversification among rural households in the study area. The study recommends a strengthening adult literacy program, provision of credit access, providing trainings, improving rural infrastructure etc to enable rural household to engage in different activities and enhance income of the rural household in the study area.Item INFLUENCE OF PRINCIPALS' LEADERSHIP STYLES ON THE TEACHERS' PERFORMANCE IN GOVERNMENT SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF HAWASSA CITY ADMINISTRATION, SIDAMA NATIONAL(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2023-05) MEBRATU DAWIT GODANAThe success of a school is significantly influenced by the teacher competencies. The principal should employ a leadership style that fosters teachers' competence, growth, and development in order to increase teacher performance. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to assess the influence of principals' leadership styles on the teachers' performance in government secondary schools of Hawassa City Administration, Sidama National Regional State, Ethiopia. To accomplish this, the study employed a descriptive survey design. The study was carried out in ten government secondary schools of Hawassa City Administration. A total of 312 respondents have participated in the study. Among them, 270 teachers were taken as a sample through simple random sampling technique. Additionally, 30 government school principals were included through purposive sampling technique. Questionnaire was distributed to teachers and school principals and interview were conducted with supervisors of the schools. Mean and standard deviations were used to analyze quantitative data while independent sample t-test was used to test the significance. The findings indicate that autocratic leadership style is dominantly practiced by principals in the school. Also, principals were intermittently controlling teachers and majority of the respondents reported that the principals make decisions dependently with little input from the rest of the group. In general, the result supposed to conclude, that principals’ leadership style of government secondary schools of Hawassa City Administration had significance influences on decision-making and delegation to improve the level of teachers’ performance and thus teachers have not been performing to the expectation. This may be especially when the teachers are not convincible, not flexible and strongminded. Therefore, the way of principals’ leadership was not implemented as expected. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the principals of governmental secondary schools should use a mixture of leadership stylesItem PSYCHO-SOCIAL FACTORS AS DETERMINANTS OF FEMALE STUDENTS’ ASSERTIVE BEHAVIOR IN EDO DUGUNA SECONDARY SCHOOL, WOLAITA ZONE, ETHIOPIA(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2023-09) EJIGAYEHU ENDRIAS TONAThe purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of psycho-social factors that affect female students‘ assertive behavior in Edo Duguna secondary school. The design of the study was descrptive and predictive correlational design.Totally 290 students were participated in this study that selected through purposive sampling technique. Three types of questionnaire including assertiveness scale, psychological and social factors scale were applied. Descriptive and Inferential statistics (Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analysis) were used to analyze the data. The mean and standard deviation results showed that, female students as demonstrated low level of assertive behavior. The result from multiple linear regression analysis showed that, from psychological factors self-confidence as stated statistically most significant predictor of assertive behavior of female students, whereas from social factors culture stated statistically most significant predictor of assertive behavior of female students. Edo Duguna Secondary School teachers should improve female student‘s assertiveness by encouraging them while they are teaching.Item THE ROLE OF PARENTING STYLE IN DEVELOPMENT OF ADOLESCENTS’ PRO-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR AMONG ADDIS KETEMA SECONDARY AND PREPARATORY STUDENTS.(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2023-10) ZINASH ESHETUThe main aim of this study was to investigate the role of parenting styles in developing adolescents’ pro-social behaviour among Addis ketema secondary and preparatory school students. The tools used in the study were questionnaires which mean that two adapted instruments, i.e. the Pro-social Tendencies Measure (PTM-R) and Parenting Style Scales (PSS) and interview. Adapted Parenting style scales questionnaires and pro-social tendencies measures were administered to a randomly selected 354 adolescent students. The study was employed explanatory mixed approach by using both inferential and descriptive statistics. The data analysis used statistical techniques like descriptive statistics, Pearson’s bivariate correlation, and regression analysis. The study found that significant positive relationship between the authoritarian as well as the authoritative parenting style and the level of adolescents pro-social behaviour development, (P<0.05) at a (.000) and (P<0.05) at a (.000) level of significance respectively. Regression analysis was performed and the result indicates the authoritative parenting style found to have a more powerful impact on development of adolescents pro-social behaviour with (β =.365, p<.05).The result from descriptive analysis shows that altruistic pro-social behaviour is the commonly practiced pro-social behaviour among the students with the mean average of (M=2.80) while other types of pro-social behaviours (Dire, Anonymous, Compliant, Public, and Emotional) are less practiced comparing to the altruistic one. The authoritative parenting style actually had a more powerful influence on the respondents’ level of pro-social behaviour development achieved. It is important for parents to guide and teach their children how to choose good friends.Item THE CURRENT PRACTICE AND CHALLENGES OF INTEGRATED FUNCTIONAL ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM IN SAWLA TOWN, GOFA ZONE: SOUTHERN ETHIOPIA REGIONAL STATE(Hawassa University, 2023-11) MULUKEN TESFAYE ZEWUDEThe main objective of this study was to examine the current practice and challenges of Integrated Functional Adult Education program in Sawula Town, Gofa zone, Southern Ethiopia Regional State. This study employed a descriptive survey design with both quantitative and qualitative data type method. From the 182 target population, 92 participants were selected from IFAE learners by using Stratified random sampling techenuqes, 8 participants were selected from IFAE facilitators with purposive sampling techenuqes, one educational office head and one IFAE expert were selected purposive sampling techenuqes. The instruments used for data collection were questionnaire, interview, focus group discussion, and observation. After collecting the data, quantitative data was analyzed using percentage, mean and SD. The qualitative data interpretation was made with a narrative analysis of relevant incident of the respondents’ responses. The findings revealed that the facilitators have no motivation in their work due to low payment, lack of government attention, highly lack of follow-up the centers and absence of integration, coordination, and commitment to improving the IFAE program from all concerned body. In IFAE centers there was highly facility problems are found in adult learner’s center, like books, modules, IFAE manuals, facilitators guide, teaching aids and absence of unsuitable IFAE centers and shortage of equipment such as chairs, tables. The learners have no motivation to attain the program due to lack of awareness. The study result showed that lack of adequate budget allocated and timely availability. In the town, despite the growth of formal education, adult education has been impeded and the program handling system becomes not hopeful. Hence, the concerned government offices have to restructure the fragmented system of the program that could minimize the gap of the existing practice. Additionally, the name of the program was decrease the degree of learner’s motivation by itself (“adult education” or ( የጎልማሳ ትምህርት). Finally, it has been recommended that the sawula twon government should become to create awareness about the program, allocate adequate budget timely, deliver trainings for facilitators, construct the learning center and fulfill different equipment’s. All government structures from Federal to Keble including, universities, colleges, NGO, illiterate and literate adults including IFAE facilitators need to play their role in well implementing the program.Item THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEENPARENTAL SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS AND LEARNERS` ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS IN GOVERNMENT SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF SIDAMA REGIONAL STATE(Hawassa university, 2023-11) EYASU ENDIRIAS EYAMOxi ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between parental socioeconomic status and student’s academic achievement in secondary schools of Sidama Regional State. To carry out this study correlational research design was employed. Participants of the study 384 were selected through simple random sampling techniques and 11 parents were selected through purposive sampling techniques. The data were collected by using questionnaire and interview. Questionnaires were used as main tool of data collection from students. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis were employed in order to meet the objective of study. Quantitative data obtained through questionnaires analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and inferential statistics like correlation analysis was used to analyze qualitative data and qualitative date analysed through narration. The findings of the study explained that there is statistically significant relationship between parental socioeconomic status and students’ academic achievements, parents income was highly correlated with students’ academic achievement, students from educated parents achieves better academic result than uneducated parents and occupation of parents affects students’ academic achievement, parents with low occupation status are unable to purchase the school goods and services for their children ,some parents wants their children to take up the same type of occupation and there was weak correlation between parental occupation and students’ academic achievements. After statistical analysis of data, the researchers concluded that parental socio- economic status; parent’s education, parental occupation; and parent’s income correlated with the academic achievement of secondary school students. Based on findings, it was recommended that Poor students should be provided scholarships, free books and other stationary. In addition, it was also recommended that the government should take steps to raise socioeconomic status of people and government should boost the economic status of house hold, and also recommended that government should take necessary action to increase and encourage parent’s education in the Sidama Regional State ,and parents should be aware of the types of occupations they are engaged in since the occupation of parents is capable of facilitating and lifting up students’ academic success and parents should spends more time with their children, especially in communicating about school activities, expectations of academic achievement in Sidama Regional state through investing in more income generating projects in the regionItem The Development and Validation of Mathematics Learning Motivation (MLM) Instrument and the Effect of MLM on Academic Achievement: The Case of Undergraduate Students in Selected Public Universities of Ethiopia(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2024-01) BELAY BEKELEThis study aimed at developing and validating MLM instruments in the context of Ethiopia and accordingly exploring the influence of MLM on mathematics achievement and academic achievement of university undergraduates in Ethiopia. Quantitative approach was employed and data was obtained on a random sample of 400 undergraduate students (M=245 and F=155) from three Ethiopian public Universities by using self-reported questionnaire and Math achievement test. The instrument, which was adapted from Butler (2016), Al Mutawah (2015), Vallerand and Blssonnette (1992), Lubienski, Robinson, Crane and Ganley ( 2013), and Ayodele(2011) consists of measures of self-efficacy, self-concept, self-determination, expectancy-value, anxieity, attribution, and achievemen-goal related motivation. In addition, a 25-item Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) was developed and validated to measure mathematics achievement. The internal consistency reliability of the MAT was found to be high (alpha =0.84). Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) were employed to assess systematic relationship between math self-beliefs and math achievement. Univariate Analysisis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and Multivariate Analysis of Covariance(MANCOVA) were also employed. Results reveal that self-concept, anxiety, and achievement-goal theories contribute to the valid 22-items MLM instrument in the case of Ethiopia; mathematics self-concept, and anxiety have a significant influence on mathematics achievement, whereas achievement goal have no significant influence on mathematics achievement. There is significant main effect and pair-wise interaction effect of self-concept, anxiety, and achievement-goal on math achievement. Mthematics achievement significantly predicts the academic achievements of university underaduates in Ethiopia. In conclusion, the self-concept, anxiety and achievement-gaol are the dominant determints of MLM in the case of selected Public Univerisites of Ethiopia. Finally, the study delineates the inferences for teaching and learning, and research.Item THE ROLE OF SCHOOL-BASED SUPERVISION IN ENHANCING QUALITY OF EDUCATION IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF HAWASSA CITY ADMINISTRATION(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2024-02) YEMISRACH MULUGETAThe purpose of the study was to assess the role of school-based supervision in enhancing quality of education in secondary schools of Hawassa city Administration. To achieve the objective of the study descriptive survey research design with mixed approach was employed. The study was conducted at four sampled schools (Misrak Chora secondary School Addis Ketema secondary School, Adare and Tesso secondary school in Hawassa city administration.) The study population was selected through simple random sampling selection. Totally,241 populations were selected as samples of the study. The data gathered were analyzed in descriptive statistics such as percentages, frequencies as well as mean and standard deviation for quantitative tools whereas thematically analyzed qualitative study. Document review, questionnaire and interviews were used as data gathering instruments. In order to achieve this purpose, this study, therefore, attempted to get answers based on the four basic research questions. The finding of the study showed that the extent of school based supervision practice was low in the study area. Furthermore, the study result confirms that the supervisors did not play their roles expected from them; as well as exerting and supporting as supervisory role to enhance quality of education in the study area was not satisfactory. Regarding the teachers professional competence, the study revealed that the school based supervision have low contribution to enhance professional competence of teachers due to ineffective provision and practice of the supervisory role. It was also found out that school supervisors themselves need to have a good command of knowledge of subject matter and methodological skills to enable them be able to see and advice on teachers. Weaknesses and to improve their professional competence. Additionally the study revealed the factors that affect the school based supervision in the study areas the finding exposed that lack of instructional materials, poor communication with superintendent, lack of in-service training in the area of instruction, inconsistence operation of instructional activities, heavy work load on instructional leaders, shortage of time to perform instructional activities, insufficient funds for training, workshops, seminars, experience sharing and lack o f trainings were the major problems in the study areas. Overall the study result shows that the extent of school based supervision practice was low in the study area. Finally, to minimize the problems of school-based supervision in secondary schools, it is recommended to give relevant in service trainings for supervisors to upgrade their supervisory activities, necessary resources such as supervision manuals and an adequate budget for the success of supervision at the school level was suggested.Item THE RELATIONSHIPBETWEEN SCHOOL SUITABILITYAND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES IN SELECTED GOVERNMENT PRIMARY SCHOOLS AT HAWASSA CITY ADMINISTRATION(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2024-03) Yisak Bancha BassaThe purpose of this study was investigating The Relationship between School Suitability and Academic Achievement of students with disabilities in selected government primary schools at Hawassa city administration. It was conducted at Tabor, Haik, &Ethiopia Tikdem primary Schools in 2023. The independent variable was school suitability which comprises hard ware and soft ware of the schools. The hard ware refers to infrastructure suitability &accessibility including building accessibility, Technology, &resource allocation. The software of the school talks about instructional methods used by teachers, Curriculum flexibility & support system designed in the schools. The dependent variable was students’ academic achievement. The study employed a cross sectional survey research design under quantitative method. Hence, 210 samples were selected by systematic random sampling technique to fill out questionnaires. However, only 205 from which 68 (33.2%) were females & 137 (66.8%) males, were correctly filled out & returned. Data were collected by Likert type self-designed questionnaire. Data analysis was done by using the descriptive & inferential statistical applications. The inferential statistics analysis examined the correlation & regression to identify significant relationship between the variables. As a result, Pearson product-moment correlation analysis indicates that there is strong correlation & relationships between independent & dependent variables that shows building accessibility (R= .702*), technology accessibility (R= .716*); Resource allocation (R= .870**); Curriculum flexibility (R= .726*); & Teaching method (R= .830**) relationship with students’ academic achievement. Furthermore, the model summary also depicted that the school suitability is a predictor of the academic achievement of students with disability with value of R= .912a; &the R-square for the equation was .832. From this it is possible to infer that the selected schools are not suitable. In other words they have no appropriate infrastructure including inaccessible building, lack of technology, poor resource allocation, curriculum rigidity, & poor instructional method. Due to this the student’s academic achievement was poor as observed on the first semester average result. Based on the findings it was recommended that there should be consideration for making the schools suitability learning zones by improving the problems identified on the hardware & software of the schools.Item PRINCIPALS LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOR INFLUENCE ON SCHOOL PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF HAWASSA CITY ADMINISTRATION, SIDAMA REGIONAL STAT(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2024-03) WONDIMAGEGN GEGA GETACHEWThe purpose of this study was to investigate the principals’ leadership behavior and school performance in secondary schools of Hawassa City Public Secondary Schools. Correlation research design was employed to explain the existing relationship between principal leadership behavior and school performance. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. The populations of this study were all secondary schools in Hawassa City. The sample of this study was (82 school leaders, 158 teachers, 44 student representatives, 30 PTSA and 6 Supervisor). The sample schools were selected using purposive sampling technique. Used sampling techniques were, simple random and availability for students, teachers and school leaders respectively. The collected data were analyzed using frequency, mean, percentage and Pearson’s Correlation to test the relationship between principals’ leadership behavior and school performance. The finding of the study showed that there is a strong relationship between participative principals’ leadership behavior and school performance because of the coefficient of Pearson’s correlation is a positive 73.3%. Conclusion of the study showed that the level of the school is not improved, hence the behavior of school leaders is not improved; Finally the researcher recommends that Principals not have to be rigid on their conditioned leadership behavior unless it is not successful in improving the performance of the school; they have to be within full rang transformational leadership who are skilled with setting the goal of the school with stake ideal influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individual consideration to sustain the improvement of the performance of the school which is the target goal of the education sector.Item PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS AND COPING MECHANISMS OF SEXUALLY ABUSED FEMALE CHILDREN: THE CASE OF ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN’S SANCTUARY DEVELOPMENT (AWSAD) SHELTER HOME IN HAWASSA CITY(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2024-03) HENOCK HAILEThis study was aimed to investigate the prevalence of psychological distress and coping mechanisms among sexually abused female children in the AWSAD shelter home in Hawassa City. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was employed, and data were collected from 60 participants using Kessler10, Post-traumatic Stress-Checklist 5 (PCL-5), and Brief Coping-28. The participants' ages ranged from 6-18 years, and data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 26. The results revealed a high prevalence of psychological distress (55%) among sexually abused female children. The Pearson correlation model showed a strong positive correlation between psychological distress and traumatic experiences (r = 0.815, p < 0.05). Additionally, there was a positive correlation between psychological distress and coping mechanisms (r = 0.280, p < 0.05), age (r = 0.308, p < 0.05), and education level (r = 0.368, p < 0.01). However, there was a weak negative correlation between psychological distress and employment (r = -0.031, p < 0.80). The study also found that the highest mean score for adaptive coping strategies was for religion or spiritual beliefs (M=3.62, SD=0.715) and doing something to think about it less (M=3.58, SD=0.907). The lowest mean score for an adaptive coping strategy was for accepting the reality (M=1.95, SD=1.333). The most commonly used maladaptive coping strategies were criticizing oneself (M=3.28, SD=1.166), self-blame (M=3.25, SD=1.174), and denial (M=2.18, SD=1.308). In conclusion, the study found a high prevalence of psychological distress among sexually abused female children, despite their use of adaptive coping mechanisms. Therefore, comprehensive and specialized support programs within shelter homes are essential to minimize further mental health problems.Item THE PREVALANCE AND ASSOCIATED CAUSAL FACTORS OF DEPRESSION AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS THE CASE OF HAWASSA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCE STUDENTS(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2024-03) MESERET LULSEGEDDepression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person’s thoughts, behaviors, feelings and sense of well-being over two weeks .The Aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of depression and its associated factors among Hawassa University College of Medicine and Health Sciences students. Cross-sectional study design was used. The sample size was 342 calculated using single population proportion formulla. Samples were selected by using stratified sampling techniques, to determine the number of students from the single department of each batch proportional allocation to the total students was used. Finally, simple random sampling technique was used to select the determined number of students from each batch. Socio economic data were collected by questionnaire. Beck’s depression inventory tools was used to determine the depression level of the students. Data were entered, cleaned, and analyzed by SPSS 25. Mean and frequency was used to describe the prevalence and other descriptive variables. While bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the association between dependent and independent variables. A significance level was set at p<0.01. The result revealed the prevalence of depression among students was 28%. Presence of medical history, drug use, drink alcohol, self-esteem, self-confidence, and social support were predictors to students’ depression. Hence the college higher officials should design and implement strategies to enhance counseling services and promote prevention strategies for depression by reducing substance use strengthening social support and boosting the self-esteem and confidence strategies.Item THE RELATIONSHIPBETWEEN SCHOOL SUITABILITYAND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES IN SELECTED GOVERNMENT PRIMARY SCHOOLS AT HAWASSA CITY ADMINISTRATION(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2024-03) YISAK BANCHAThe purpose of this study was investigating The Relationship between School Suitability and Academic Achievement of students with disabilities in selected government primary schools at Hawassa city administration. It was conducted at Tabor, Haik, &Ethiopia Tikdem primary Schools in 2023. The independent variable was school suitability which comprises hard ware and soft ware of the schools. The hard ware refers to infrastructure suitability &accessibility including building accessibility, Technology, &resource allocation. The software of the school talks about instructional methods used by teachers, Curriculum flexibility & support system designed in the schools. The dependent variable was students’ academic achievement. The study employed a crosssectional survey research design under quantitative method. Hence, 210 samples were selected by systematic random sampling technique to fill out questionnaires. However, only 205 from which 68 (33.2%) were females & 137 (66.8%) males, were correctly filled out & returned. Data were collected by Likert type self-designed questionnaire. Data analysis was done by using the descriptive & inferential statistical applications. The inferential statistics analysis examined the correlation & regression to identify significant relationship between the variables. As a result, Pearson product-moment correlation analysis indicates that there is strong correlation & relationships between independent & dependent variables that shows building accessibility (R= .702* ), technology accessibility (R= .716*); Resource allocation (R= .870**); Curriculum flexibility (R= .726*); & Teaching method (R= .830**) relationship with students’ academic achievement. Furthermore, the model summary also depicted that the school suitability is a predictor of the academic achievement of students with disability with value of R= .912a ; &the R-square for the equation was .832. From this it is possible to infer that the selected schools are not suitable. In other words they have no appropriate infrastructure including inaccessible building, lack of technology, poor resource allocation, curriculum rigidity, & poor instructional method. Due to this the student’s academic achievement was poor as observed on the first semester average result. Based on the findings it was recommended that there should be consideration for making the schools suitability learning zones by improving the problems identified on the hardware & software of the schools.Item ASSESSING THE UTILIZATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF HAWASSA CITY ADMINISTRATION(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2024-05) MAHLET KASSAThe primary objective of this research was to assess the utilization of instructional materials and technology in secondary schools of Hawassa city Administration. To this end, Descriptive survey design was use. The researcher developed two types of questionnaires as the main data collecting instruments for addressing teachers and students. In addition to the main data collecting tools, interview, observation and document analysis were also used to help supplement the data gained through the questionnaires. The responses to close ended questions were analyses using SPSS statistics version 26 computer software. The data obtained through interview and document analysis were analyzed by condensing the information into key themes and topics. The findings of the study revealed that in the sampled schools availability of traditional materials like textbooks and teacher's guides was generally good, but significant gaps existed in resources such as manipulatives, visual aids, and technology-based tools. Utilization of instructional materials leaned towards traditional methods, with limited use of technology-based tools, particularly in public schools. Factors affecting application included inadequate supply and access, ineffective utilization, insufficient training opportunities, lack of support from school administration, technical infrastructure issues, and limited internet connectivity. Finally, the researcher recommends that the school administration, teachers and the concerned government bodies should work collaboratively to ensure the adequate availability and use of instructional materials and technologies for effective learning and teaching activity. Future research is suggested to assess the impact on students' academic performance.Item INTEGRATING INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE INTO GENERAL SCIENCE: CONCEPTION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF DAWURO ZONE PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN LOMA BOSA WOREDA, ETHIOPIA(Hawassa University, 2024-05) MARTA JINGAW TENKUThe objective of this study was to explore teacher’s conception on the integration of indigenous knowledge in general science in the case of governmental primary schools of Dawuro zone Loma Bosa Woreda. Out of 30 governmental primary schools in the Woreda 10 primary schools were selected by using simple random sampling technique and all teachers teaching General science were purposively sampled. School principals, cluster supervisors and department head teachers were also purposively included in the study. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaire, interview and actual classroom observation. The finding of the study revealed that teachers have a positive perception on the integrating of IK into General Science. The sum mean score was 3.56 (with a standard deviation of 0.72), reflecting favorable perceptions. This finding was supported by interviews with cluster supervisors, school principals, and department heads. The other issue addressed in this study was about the level of awareness of teachers on the integration of indigenous knowledge. As the result, the study exposed those teachers demonstrated moderate level of awareness regarding the integration of IK in General Science teaching. The average score was 2.52 (with a standard deviation of 1.1), interview data and classroom observations further supported this finding. Teachers actively engaged with Indigenous knowledge during General Science instruction, resulting in an overall mean score of 2.92 (with a standard deviation of 0.87). Even though, the observation data showed that the teachers’ practical implementation of integration of IK was assessed as poor. The other question focused in the present study was about the major challenges teachers were facing during integrating the indigenous knowledge in teaching General science. Despite positive perceptions and awareness, challenges persisted in the study; for instance, insufficient well-documented resources and inadequate training in IK hindered successful integration into the General Science curriculum. The scarcity of relevant national and local resources, including IK-focused textbooks for students and teachers’ guides, posed additional obstacles. An explanatory Sequential design and a mixed research ap proach were used in the study. The participants involved in the study were general and special education teachers, principals, supervisors, the head of the City administration's education of fice, and Education experts in the Woreda/Zone education office. Generally, 66 sample subjects were included in this investigation. Questionnaires, interviews, focus groups discussion, docu ment analysis and observation were used to collect data. The quantitative data were analyzed using frequency, percentiles, mean value, and standard deviation, whereas, the qualitative data were arranged, categorized, and subjected to thematic analysis in order to identify any develop ing response patterns. The findings revealed that barriers to the use of assistive technology to support academic success for children with disabilities were a lack of funding and information, a lack of budget, non-fulfillment of orders due to cost, a lack of skilled specialists in the field, and others. So, it is possible to conclude that students with disabilities in Mizan Aman selected pri mary School had little access to and did not have much utilize ATs in the way it is expected to be but the understanding about AT is good. In light of the findings, the study recommends that col laboration and evidence of commitment from the educational office, Woreda/Zone/schools, and other stakeholders to achieve the accessibility and utilization of assistive technology Influence on Academic Achievement of Students with disability in resource centers is necessary.Item PRACTICES AND CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF PROVIDING SOCIAL SKILLS TRAINING FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM IN BRIGHT CENTER HAWASSA CITY ADMINISTRATION(HAWASSA UNIVERSITY, 2024-06) SARA DENEKEThe main purpose of this study was to investigate the Practices, Challenges and Opportunities of Providing Social Skills Training for Children with Autism in Bright Center Hawassa town Administration. The study followed A qualitative approach and case study design for exploring and understanding the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem.The study involved administrators, program coordinator, teachers and parents as participants by using purposive sampling techniques.The data was collected through interviews, observation and document analysis. The finding of the study indicates that even though it faces many challenges, the practice of social skill training is on good way in Bright Center.The center provided various types of social skill training. However, several pitfalls hinder the intended social training for autistic children, such as poor awareness of parents about social skill training for finding a diagnosis and managing the behaviors of their autistic child, lack of trained personnel to improve the planned level of social skill, the restlessness of autistic children in the center and lack of adequate and constant resources of budget that may have triple impacts required resources, instruments and are counted as challenges of effective social skill training for children with autism in Hawassa bright autism. Deficits in social skills may negatively impact several essential domains including, academic achievement, interpersonal relationships, behavior, mental health, and adult life outcomehencethe study forwarded a recommendation to the town administration to recognize the provision of education in autism center and allocation of adequate budget for effectiveness autistic children, especially in social skill training.Administrative bodies in the centersshould make the link with a different governmental and non-governmental organization sto widen the level of services in the city as required. The program coordinator should also create awareness for the parents as they play central roles in social skill training at home and follow upon the parents’ role as well as the teachers. In doing so, they could monitor and see various gaps which should be corrected in time and take remedial actions.
